Where does the majority of the money traded on the stock markets come from directly?

In other words, the last hand(s) that release that money into a particular stock or option in the market…..

Mutual funds, hedge funds, university and other not-for-profit endowment funds, pension funds, and sovereign funds (like the investment agency for the Kuwait government investing all the excess oil profits.)

The biggest investor in the US, and maybe the world, is the California Public Employees Retirement System (CALPERS)

    Institutions, fund managers. This may come from pension providers for example.
