I want to start investing in stocks, but i have no idea how to. I heard its good money, but i don’t understand where i need to go to start trading stocks, and how old does one have to be to make an account for investing in stocks. Also could you explain to me what a mutual fund is and the basics of investing in stocks? Thank You.

To invest in stocks all you need to do is:
a) Be 18 (if under 18 then you need your parents to cosign)
b) Talk to a stock broker to invest your money
c) Have money to invest

And that’s it, but that doesn’t mean you will make money in the stock market. In this case I will assume you want to make money so there are extra steps that need to be taken.

To make money from stocks you need to:
a) Find a company that is either starting out or is in an economic slump
-the stock prices should be low at that time
-a good example is Ford way back during the economic crisis and stocks were under $2
b) Research the company
-who is the ceo?
-does the ceo have experience with running a business?
-how good is the companies business plan?
-will the company thrive or go under?
-these are some good questions to ask. When I bought my Ford stock, I knew the government wasn’t going to let Ford go out of business and I researched and saw that the new ceo that was put in charge was put in situations like this before and saved companies from going out of business.
c) Decide how much you will invest
-how much can you afford to lose?
-how strongly do you believe in the company?
d) Talk to a stock broker
-fees will be charged with investing in stocks
-the lower the fees, the more you can invest
e) Watch the stock market and check your stock price every day
-when you buy at a low price, you can sell at a high price for bigger profits
-don’t gamble for the jackpot! earlier this year, I could have sold my Ford stock for $18 share making a big profit considering i bought the stock at $2 a share and invested $1,000 for 500 shares. I was going to wait for it to hit $20 a share but it dropped quickly to $14 a share and now it is less than $10 because of the crisis in Europe and the amount of Ford cars sold there dropped.
f) If everything was done correctly, talk to your stock broker to withdraw your money into your savings account.
-this is where you make your money
g) If things look like they are headed in a bad direction and your company might go out of business, talk to your stock broker quick and with draw your money before you lose all of it!
-when things settle out at a lower price you can re-invest if you think the company might recover.

Here is a good link on mutual funds http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_fund

It’s clear now it’s a mistake having stock markets:in economy what is the meaning of AAA stock and how can stocks influence one country’s economy?i thought stocks are for over rich bastards so how can world economy go wrong because stocks are falling? Please explain to me like i am 5 or something…thank you!

No, it’s not now clearly a mistake having stocks. The stocks are doing the right thing – it’s the government that’s doing the wrong thing.

Stocks means shares of ownership. Say you buy a house, and you and your brother equally share the expense. So you agree to each equally have a share of the ownership. That’s shares of ownership.

Stocks is like that, only they are used where there are very many people with an ownership interest, and they may be buying and selling them all the time. For example in a big company, let’s say General Electric, many many people – hundreds of thousands – may own shares, and they don’t know each other, and these shares are being bought and sold all the time. Unlike you and your brother’s house shares, stocks are specially made to be easy to buy and sell without major paperwork hassles.

Stocks aren’t for rich bastards. They’re for anyone who wants to *own* productive assets. Many ordinary workers own stocks, because you don’t need a lot of money to buy them. They may be only a dollar or two per share.

Remember, by owning something that produces food, or clothing, or shelter, or transport, or communications, you are not doing society a disservice. You are not harming anyone. You could just *spend or waste* the money. The fact you don’t, that you put it into stocks is *good* for society, and for poor people, not bad.

The world economy is not going bad because stocks are falling. It’s the other way around. Stocks are falling, meaning the value of your house-share is going down, meaning the value of your house is going down, because *governments* are looting the economy, taking money from honest hard-working people, and *giving it away* to anyone they think will vote for them. Government is destroying capital by stealing (they can legalise their own stealing). It’s like government is going into your home, and taking away the curtains and paintings, or digging up the foundations. So your house is worth less. It’s not your fault for owning a house! Don’t blame stock-owners! It’s the government’s fault for looting you.

How is the government looting the economy? Three main ways;
1. by taxation
2. by inflating the currency = printing money = lowering interest rates
3. by borrowing money.
All these things *destroy capital*, and capital is what makes a country rich.

The solution is not to blame stock-holders, the solution is to stop government from taking other people’s property and wasting it on wars, handouts to billionaires, and interfering in everything.

I want to learn about how stocks work in general. Where do I go to buy stocks? Where do I go to get the money I earn? Where do I deposit the money? When can I withdraw or get money from my stocks? Any other useful info and experience you’ve had. How risky are stocks? Do most people gain money or lose money?

They are right you start by opening a Brokerage account. The most popular choice for beginning investors is to go with an online account at a discount brokerage such as Scottrade.com (that’s what I use) or etrade, etc. etrade is $10 trades which is very expensive (in my opinion) compared to Scottrade at $7. I haven’t really found any other reliable brokerages that are cheaper than Scottrade. I chose Scottrade bc it is the cheapest and does exactly what I need it to do. I don’t need help from brokers on what stocks to buy or when to buy, I just need a method of purchasing/selling stocks. Some might feel at home with other brokerages that provide more support or help from brokers though. (they will also pay more). You can deposit to Scottrade over the internet, you can use a service called "MoneyDirect" which just allows you to make electronic deposits from your bank account. After you have the money deposited onto your Scottrade acct u have funds available to buy stocks. If you buy a stock it is up to you when to sell it. You can sell it after a year or hold it for 30 years if you want to. But remember that, until you sell the stock, your money is at risk. As soon as you sell the stock, you get the money for it back to your Scottrade acct. The company could go out of business the next day but you would still have the money since you sold just in time. You can request a check to be sent to you from Scottrade when you want to withdraw money from your acct. This can take a few days but it’s usually about 1-2 days. My inclination is to say that it’s logical to assume that most people actually do make money from the stock market. If someone is consistently losing all of their money in the stock market, it seems like they would eventually stop trading on it, and most traders left over will be those who are making profit. Those who lose money are the ones who are dreaming of being "instant millionaires" by trading on the stock market. It takes a lot of work and research to play the market. You should not aspire to be an instant millionaire, and you should attempt to limit risk by choosing companies you know for sure are going to be successful. Never invest in a company you do not understand, never invest in one because someone tells you it’s bound to become "huge", at least not until you have studied it yourself and determined that it is truly a good company. My post implies this, but I’ll go out and say it anyway: Do not invest in penny stocks. You need to look for solid companies that are worth more than they are selling for. And don’t risk money on companies you are not sure about.

I understand how to get the standard deviation for a stock by going through the variance. What I’m curious about is how to convert the stocks standard deviation into the stocks beta value. Also what is considered a low volatile stock as far as standard deviation goes? I know with the beta anything higher than 1.0 is considered highly volatile. Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

This is an excellent tutorial that someone else posted on how to calculate beta using Excel. A beta higher than one doesnt necessarily mean a stock is highly volatile. It just means the returns are more volatile than the market. Beta is the risk that is added to a diversified portfolio.
