My first album (without this song, but with lots of other good ones) is available at http://www.DFTBA.com. We’re running low on stock though, you should should go get it while you can.
In which Hank lip syncs to a song Katherine sings but he wrote the words to even though the music was written by someone else and originally sung by Britney Spears.
Lyrics:
I met you in an office down on main street
you said you could make my future much more easy
all I had to do was give you access to my money
and you’d double it
double it baby
I never really understood the things that you would say
If we amortized deposits into my IRA
We could optimize my no-load fund with proceeds from my tax refund
we’d just begun
Just begun baby

I will tell you what I I
Just reali-i-ized

until I’m eight fi-i-ive

You said stocks were always gonna go up
Now I look at you and it makes me want to throw up
You said there were risks out there but I could be a millionaire
just like you

And I can’t determine what exactly I was thinkin’

I have looked at stock investing for dummies, but need a few more to check out and the ones I’ve seen are a bit more advanced for someone who has no background on the subject.
wow thanks for all the input. so are all these books good for a total idiot? I’m more of a computer and science oriented person and don’t know the first thing about economics and investment type stuff. My dad was explaining to me about stock options and puts and all these other nonsense and I was just staring blankly.
Books I have learned from:
Beginners should read: Andrew Tobias, The Only Investment Guide You’ll Ever Need
Everyone should read: Benjamin Graham, The Intelligent Investor — get the new edition with notes by Jason Zweig
Burton Malkiel, A Random Walk Down Wall Street (not that I totally believe the efficient market hypothesis, but it’ll make you take big claims with a grain of salt)
Philip Fisher, Common Stocks
Anything by Peter Lynch — start with One Up On Wall Street
Almost every book about Buffett. Start with The Essays of Warren Buffett or The Warren Buffet Way or Buffettology. Also books by his partner Charlie Munger.
Joel Greenblatt, The Little Book that Beat the Market
Joel Greenblatt, You Can Be a Stock Market Genius
Pat Dorsey, The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing
David & Tom Gardner, The Motley Fool Investment Guide
*******************************************************************
P.S. squeeg, I saw your followup. If you’re worried about the books we’ve mentioned being overly complex or technical, the only ones I’d worry about in that respect would be the Security Analysis book by Graham, and secondarily possibly the Intelligent Investor by Graham and Burton Malkiel’s.
Certainly the Tobias, Lynch, Greenblatt, Dorsey and most of the Buffet-related books are all very accessible even to the novice. Read Tobias first, it’s older but still fun and still accessible and relevant — plus it sold millions of copies, so you can find it used and save $.
I understand the x-axis is time and the y-axis is price, but what do the vertical dark and light lines and bars tell you?
On a "OHLC bar chart," the price is represented by lines or bars which have little things sticking out of them. This is what Califrich was describing to you.
On most charts, you see the price on the top and under the price there are some bars. Those bars are called the VOLUME. The volume bars tell us how many shares were traded during the session. On a daily chart, each bar indicates one day. So, the size of a bar tells you how many shares were traded on a certain day. On a weekly chart, each bar shows the total number of shares traded during a certain week. On a monthly chart, each bar represents one month…
I have been using Advanced Analyzer from TDAmeritrade for years and want to complement it.
ThinkorSwim.com . I’ve used TD Ameritrade when it was Datek (and seems like it was something before that, but I can’t remember) but anyways, a long time. I have lately had it with all the changes with TD AMTD. I can’t handle the growing pains any longer. A lot of my fellow traders had suggested ToS (Think or Swim) so I’ve packed my AMTD bags and moved my accounts over, and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve tried a few others brokers, like Interactive Brokers and find the value of service and product at ToS to be second to none. A lot of other traders like OX (OptionsXpress.com). I haven’t used them, but am told they are good as well. Both offer state of the art real time charts, and analysis that most companies charge $50+ a month for. Not to mention, commish is dirt cheap!
